Meet our Reception team
Miss Robinson - Class Teacher
Mrs Jones - Teaching Assistant
We are all looking forward to the upcoming year and cannot wait for the children to start their `Journey to Excellence’ in Audley Primary School.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage children learn best when they experience learning first hand, through meaningful interactions with others, through physical activity and through play. The Early Years curriculum emphasises three prime areas of learning:
- Personal, social and emotional
- Communication and language
- Physical
The curriculum breaks down into four further areas of learning:
- Literacy
- Maths
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Teaching in Reception is organised through a range of approaches and provides a balance of child initiated and adult-led activities:
- Planned focused activities where adults work with a small group of children at a time. Teachers will differentiate the activity to meet the needs of every child participating
- Small group teaching of early reading and writing through a phonics based programme called Little Wandle Revised Phonics
- Whole-class teaching for short periods of time such as shared story time, direct teaching (for example of maths), songs and rhymes, discussions and sharing work
- Opportunities for teachers to work alongside children as they develop their own interests in particular areas of the curriculum.
In our Reception class the children have access to a rich learning environment, which provides them with the opportunities and conditions to flourish in all aspects of their development.
Each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others which values children’s efforts, interests and purposes as instrumental to successful learning.
The children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults. Teachers make a judgement with regard to the learning opportunities provided. As the children grow older, and as their development allows, it is expected that the balance will gradually shift towards more activities led by adults, to help children prepare for more formal learning, ready for Year 1.
Key information
- PE will be on a Thursday morning. We recommend that P.E kit is left in school and available at all times. As we occasionally have different sports `taster sessions’, which are led by outside coaches. These sessions could fall on a different day from our scheduled P.E slot. It would be a shame for children to miss out on these extra special lessons
- Homework will be set on Google classroom every Friday to be returned the following Wednesday. This will involve a Homework Challenge linked to what the children have been learning about that week in school
- Please don’t forget to label all children’s school uniform and P.E Kit
- I appreciate that parents / carers are extremely busy, but please try to read with your child as often as possible. As they say the practice makes perfect! By reading more the children will become more comprehensive and confident, which will help with children’s phonics knowledge, understanding, speaking and listening. Reading books will be changed on Monday and Thursday
Should you have any concerns or wish to discuss anything, please do not hesitate to come and speak to me. I am always happy to be around for a quick chat in the mornings, or alternatively we can arrange an appointment after school. In addition to this, you are always welcome to write a note and pass it to me in the mornings, and we can arrange a time to discuss it further at a later date.
Thank you!
The brilliant Donaldson team
Welcome to Rosen Class!
Our wonderful class teacher is Mrs Afzal, and we are lucky to have three amazing teaching assistants supporting our learning: Mrs Simpson, Ms Shilliday and Mrs Hopkins. Together, they help make Rosen Class a fun, exciting and inspiring place to learn.
We are an enthusiastic, charismatic and happy class, always curious and ready to explore new ideas. This year, we can’t wait to dive into exciting topics, discover new skills and share our learning with each other.
Our class is named after the fantastic author Michael Rosen, who has written many of our favourite stories and poems, including Little Rabbit Foo Foo, Blue and Chocolate Cake. We love his playful way with words and enjoy reading and performing his poems. This year we’ll also be exploring traditional stories and other classics, such as We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
Our classroom and outdoor area are bright, welcoming and full of colour. Displays celebrate our brilliant work and also act as helpful tools for our learning. Around the room, resources are neatly organised in clearly labelled trays, so we can be independent and take responsibility for our own learning.
This year is especially exciting as we are moving from Reception routines into Year 1 routines. That means we’ll still have plenty of fun, creative activities, but we’ll also be getting used to more structured lessons and timetables. We will be practising sitting at our Home Seats, following set lesson times, and building up our independence and resilience as learners.
In Rosen Class, everyone has a role to play. We have special monitors called Classroom Helpers who take on important jobs each day, helping us to look after our classroom and each other.
We absolutely love reading! Our cosy Woodland Reading Corner is filled with some of our favourite books, always ready for us to curl up with. We use Little Wandle in our phonics sessions to help us grow as confident readers, supported by our colourful phonics display, grapheme chart and words of the week.
Maths in Rosen Class is active and hands-on. We explore numbers through games, challenges and practical activities. We practise place value, addition, subtraction, measuring, problem-solving and even times tables with the help of our interactive displays.
We also enjoy keeping active! This year, we will need to come into school wearing our PE kit on Mondays and Thursdays so we are ready straight away for our PE and Games lessons.
Our learning doesn’t stop there. We also enjoy cross-curricular topics that weave together subjects like Art, Science, History and Geography. Our first exciting topic is ‘Enchanted Woodlands’, where we will immerse ourselves in magical stories, explore nature and use our imaginations to link our learning across different subjects.
We are so proud to be part of Rosen Class - a place where we learn, laugh and grow together every day.
Welcome to Browne Class!
This year our teachers are Mrs Fernandes and Mrs Burdett. We are looking forward to working hard and sharing your learning and achievements with you. We are learning about some very exciting topics this year so keep a look out for some fun trips and workshops that will be happening throughout the year!
In Autumn 1, we will be learning about Victorians in ‘Up the Chimney’, focusing on how toys have changed and will be creating our own marble runs in DT and Science. Following this, we will take a flight over to Australia during our topic ‘Journey down under’ and explore the Great Barrier Reef. After Christmas, our topic is ‘The Circle of Life’. We will be writing life cycle information texts and exploring how different animals change and grow. We will be learning about our local area in ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ in Spring 2 and Summer 1, reading Flat Stanley and observing nature across Caterham. Finally, we will be reading Katie Morag stories during our topic ‘Besides the seaside’.
PE - Our PE days this year will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please come to school dressed in your PE kits on these days so we can spend more time doing lots of physical activity and having fun!
Homework - Is set on Friday and will be due the following Wednesday. There will be a piece of EGPS (English, grammar, punctuation and spelling) and a Doodle Maths challenge. Homework will be published on Google Classroom.
Spelling - Word lists are published on Google Classroom at the end of each week. Class tests will take place on Fridays.
Reading - Daily reading is expected to be completed at home alongside the daily reading undertaken by the pupils in class. Pupils will choose a library book on Thursdays, these need to be returned to school on the following Thursday. Scheme books will be issued on Tuesdays and need to be returned to school the following Tuesday.
Uniform and Spare Clothes - As we are an OPAL school and play outside in all weather, please make sure your child brings a coat, wellies (which can be left at school) and a change of uniform in a named bag - especially socks!
Finally, school stationary is provided so your child does not need to bring their own pencil-case to avoid them being lost or damaged.
If you have any queries, questions or concerns, please do come and catch me at the end of the day or drop an email to the office to request a phone call.
Thank you!
Mrs Fernandes
Y2 Class teacher
Welcome to Fine Class!
Welcome to Year 3 Fine Class! The children are now in the juniors and so they will be encouraged to show more independence both in their learning and when organising their possessions. As a Rights Respecting School, we respect that children have the right to a high-quality, inspiring education that builds upon knowledge, talents and abilities. As such, Year 3 will be exploring each of our topics through a wide range of activities that cater to different learning styles; from dress-up days to experiments; outdoor learning to arts and crafts; the use of technology and much more. It is going to be a very exciting year! Information on trips and workshops will be available nearer the time.
Curriculum
Please refer to the curriculum learning journey for details of the topics covered this year. This year we have a new exciting coherent curriculum and will be exploring all the foundation subjects through exciting themes such as; Rock n roll, Tremors, Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Jungle Boogie, The Jewel of the Nile and Water, Water Everywhere. Expect children to be coming home talking about all the exciting learning they have done in class.
Homework
It is really important that pupils have a daily reading session at home for a minimum of 20 minutes and this needs to be recorded in their reading records with a parental signature. Please make time to hear your child read aloud whenever possible and discuss their reading with them. Practice questions such as “Can you predict what might happen next in the story?”, “What would you do in that situation?” and the ability to find key facts and summarise information will help them to develop skills that will be essential in later life.
In addition to the daily reading, to extend what the children have learnt in school, English and maths homework will be set every Friday and is due in on the following Wednesday. All pupils are expected to complete their homework on time and to the best of their ability. Spellings (also set on a Friday) must be learnt regularly throughout the week in preparation for a spelling test on the following Friday. The school subscribes to the maths computer program Doodle Maths. Children can log in at any time to practise their maths skills and sometimes it will form part of their set homework.
PE
PE and games will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please make sure all uniform including PE kit and uniform is labelled so mislaid items can be easily identified. For safety, all watches and earrings must be removed before games. If your child is unable to do this please, as a parent or carer, check they are removed before school. It is important that children wanting to get their ears pierced should wait until an appropriate time in the summer holidays to do this.
Many pupils find buttoning shirts correctly and tying ties difficult - if you can help your child practice these skills it would be really helpful, as well as practicing tying their laces on their trainers.
Class equipment
As children are still quite young, Audley will continue to provide all class equipment for children in Year 3 therefore no pencil cases should be brought into school.
Communication
Please put any short messages in the reading record which will be picked up by the adults in the class. Staff will lead the children out at the end of the day but if you need to discuss any concerns it is probably best to contact the office so an appointment can be made.
Thank you!
Mrs Hill and Mrs Ivey
Hello and welcome to Year 4, Walliams Class!
Our class is named after the author and comedian David Walliams and we are enjoying reading a selection of his books, which are available in our Bookflix corner! We are a caring, enthusiastic class with a great sense of humour, who are extremely diligent and keen on learning! As a Rights Respecting School we decided that for our Class Charter - Article 2 (non-discrimination) was the most important, this states that - ‘every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, ability or any other status has equal rights’ - as specified in the UN Convention on the rights of the child.
This year our teachers is Mrs Afzal.
The topics that we will be covering from our Coherent Curriculum are as follows:
- Gladiators
- Potions
- Saxon Settlers
- Burps, Bottoms and Bile
- Frozen (Elsa not included)
- Home is where the heart is
We are very excited about all our learning opportunities which will be enhanced by workshops hosted by outside agencies, trips, STEAM activities and outdoor learning sessions which have been carefully planned to link to each of our topics! There are also several lunchtime and after school clubs that we have the opportunity to join.
Routines:
- Homework- will be set on Google Classroom. Assignments will be set on a Friday and be due back the following Wednesday
- PE - Sessions will take place on Thursdays and Fridays; children should attend school in PE kit ready for an active session
- Reading: Daily reading will be expected with detailed comments recorded in reading records. Banded reading books will be changed on Monday and Thursdays
We have lots of exciting things to learn this year and hope you have enjoyed reading about our class!
Welcome to Year 5!
Our Year 5 teaching and support team are: Mrs Nicholls, Mrs Jones and Mr Mould.
We are looking forward to leading our class on a ‘Journey to Excellence’ this year with exciting, engaging lessons and experiences.
Across the year we will be covering a range of topics, starting off with ‘Fantasy Worlds’ where we will be writing and creating our own fantasy settings inspired by Roald Dahl's BFG; as well as our *new* Whole Class Reading text: The Land of Roar. We will be learning about a range of mountains and exhibitions in ‘Explorers’. After Christmas, we will travel back to the year 793 to discover the trials and tribulations of the ‘Vikings’ whilst we discuss if they were ‘Traders or Invaders’. We will be debating the judicial system in ‘Romance and Retribution’. In summer term, we focus on space in ‘Star Gazers’ and will finish our year exploring Greek mythology in ‘Greece is the word’.
PE: We will be having PE lessons on Mondays and Tuesdays; so please make sure that children arrive at school in PE kits on these days. We will be having swimming lessons at De Stafford Secondary School in the summer term on Friday mornings. Please remember all jewellery needs to be removed for lessons or not worn on PE days.
Homework: This will be set on a Friday and should be returned by Wednesday through Google Classroom*. Year 5 and Year 6 students are invited to attend Homework Club on Mondays, in order to support this. If for any reason homework is not completed, please send a note in your child's Reading Record and we can arrange for a break or lunch time catch up.
Spelling: *The homework exception is s, which will be tested weekly on a Friday. Each half term, an overview will be published containing the spellings we will be focusing on each week in class. Please ensure you continue to practice them at home, particularly by using them in sentences (this consolidates the spelling in memory best).
Reading should be a minimum of 15 minutes a night and 5 minutes on a reflection (written by pupils) about a character or the plot, which should be recording in their reading record for an adult to check daily.
If you have any worries or concerns, please speak to us at the end of the day.
We are looking forward to working with you all this year and sharing our learning journey with you.
The Year 5 Team
We are very excited to welcome your child into Morpurgo Class this year.
Mrs Ferguson, Mrs McKenna and Mrs Burdett will be leading the class on a “Journey to Excellence” as we reach this very important milestone in your child’s primary career.
We begin the year with our 'Hidden Depths' topic, which includes our 5-day residential to Marchants Hill. This will be a fun and educational week, giving us the chance to bond as a class and develop key life skills. Throughout the year, we cover 'WW1 - The Great War', 'WW2 - Evacuation, ' Macbeth', 'Have a Heart' and we finish the year with our end of year musical.
Of course, a major focus of Year 6 will be preparation for the SATs in May. We will all be working hard to ensure every child reaches their full potential. To support learning at home, you may wish to purchase a revision guide. We recommend the CGP series as well as “Achieve 100 PLUS” for children aiming for Greater Depth.
Year 6 is also about preparing children for the next stage of their education. Pupils will be encouraged to take on greater responsibilities and leadership roles. As the oldest children in the school, we expect them to be excellent role models. Opportunities include Head Boy/Girl, Prefect and House Captain, all of which require teamwork, respect, creativity and responsibility.
Homework
Spelling - 10 weekly words following our spelling scheme. Pupils also have access to Spelling Shed for homework practice throughout the week.
-
Reading - Minimum of 15 minutes per night, plus a short reflection (around 5 minutes) on the plot or a character. Paired reading and scribing are fine if this helps
-
Consolidation task - Set each Friday and due the following Wednesday. If homework cannot be completed, please send a note so we can arrange a lunchtime catch-up
PE
-
PE days: Thursday and Friday (swimming on Fridays after half-term)
-
Children should wear their PE kits to school on these days
-
For safety, all jewellery must be removed for PE. If ears are newly pierced, children should bring plasters to cover them during the 6-week healing period. After that time, earrings should be removed
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to us at the end of the day or arrange a meeting through the school office.
We look forward to a successful and exciting year with you and your children.
Warm regards,
The Year 6 Team
