Welcome to Year 5! Our Year 5 teaching team are: Mrs Nicholls and Mrs Baldock.

We are looking forward to leading our class on a ‘Journey to Excellence’ this year with exciting, engaging lessons and experiences.

Across the year we will be covering a range of topics, starting off with ‘Fantasy Lands’ where we will be writing and creating our own fantasy settings inspired by the BFG. We will be learning about a range of mountains and exhibitions in ‘Explorers’. After Christmas, we will travel back to the year 793 to discover the trials and tribulations of the ‘Vikings’ whilst we discuss if they were ‘Traders or Invaders’. We will be debating the judicial system in ‘Romance and Retribution’. In summer term, we focus on space in ‘Star Gazers’ and will finish our year exploring Greek mythology in ‘Greece is the word’.

PE: We will be having PE lessons on Wednesdays and Fridays; so please make sure that children arrive at school in PE kits on these days. We will be having swimming lessons at De Stafford Secondary School in the Summer term of 2024 on Friday mornings. Please remember all jewellery needs to be removed for lessons or not worn on PE days.

Homework: This will be set on a Friday and should be returned by Wednesday through Google Classroom*. Year 5 and Year 6 students are invited to attend Homework Club on Mondays, in order to support this. If for any reason homework is not completed, please send a note in your child's Reading Record and we can arrange for a break or lunch time catch up.

Spelling:  * The homework exception is Spellings, which will be tested weekly on a Friday. Each half term, an overview will be published containing the spellings we will be focusing on each week in class. Please ensure you continue to practice them at home, particularly by using them in sentences (this consolidates the spelling in memory best). 

Reading should be a minimum of 15 minutes a night and 5 minutes on a reflection (written by pupils) about a character or the plot, which should be recording in their reading record for an adult to check daily. If you have any concerns, then paired reading and scribing for your child is acceptable to keep within the 15 minutes.
